The Institute has held two successful beef Summits in Botswana with the aim of exposing leaders to best practices in boosting beef production. Botswana contributes significantly to the global economy’s food security, nutrition and sustainability through the supply of beef that is majorly exported to Europe and other parts of the world. Essentially beef exports is the second highest foreign exchange earner for Botswana.
The vibrant beef sector in Botswana has challenges to share and learn from since it has one of the highest standards of beef farming and processing in the world. The focus is to share as well as celebrate achievements, identify challenges and opportunities and map out improvement steps for investors, Legislators and executives.
Legislators and Executives from Counties including Bomet, Samburu, Nakuru, Baringo, Mandera, Isiolo, Garissa, Marsabit, Siaya, Migori, Kisii, Narok, Laikipia, kajiado and Tana River majorly forming the pastoralist’s belt appear to have sufficient interest in elevating the livelihood of their people. Although cattle farming is a key economic activity amongst the communities living in these counties, Kenya is yet to attain global standards of beef production. Challenges in this sector include: – extreme weather conditions, disease, risk of death, movement of livestock, human-wildlife conflict and risks of school dropouts.
This summit provides your Counties Executives and Legislators (particularly in the Agriculture Committee of the Assembly) to explore new policy directions, approaches, alternative livestock varieties, technology options to enhance efficiency and nutrition that can positively impact on the livelihood of the people.
